The James City County Police Department C.O.P.s (Community Outreach Program) Camp is a week-long day camp for youth between the ages of 10 and 13. C.O.P.s Camp focuses on engaging today’s youth in their community by volunteering and fundraising for a local non-profit organization.
C.O.P.s Camp participants are split into teams led by a Police Officer mentor. The teams compete against each other for prizes and rewards based on activities, tasks and fund-raising efforts.
The Every 30 Minutes program is an alcohol awareness event held annually at a local high school before prom and graduation. The program is based on the statistic that every 30 minutes, someone is killed in an alcohol-related vehicle crash.
The program is a joint effort between the James City County Police and Fire Departments, the Williamsburg-James City County Commonwealth's Attorney Office and the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. A mock crash with student actors is staged with realistic response from Police, Fire and Medics to demonstrate the severity of driving under the influence.
The James City County Police Pathfinders program is an organization that encourages students to participate in numerous educational and recreational activities while learning about a career in law enforcement.
Pathfinder members participate in hands-on training and team building exercises in order to experience some aspects of this occupation. One must have completed the 8th grade and be between 14 and 18 years old to participate in the program. School Resource Officer Sean Gormus offers the Police Science Club at Toano Middle School to students interested in finding out more about law enforcement.
