Criminal Investigations Unit
Responsibilities
The Criminal Investigations Unit conducts prompt professional investigations of offenses that occur within James City County. The identification and apprehension of individuals committing crimes, the proper legal charging, and presentation of evidence in court help ensure that perpetrators are held accountable for their crimes. The Investigations Unit is tasked with the responsibility of handling criminal investigations that require a special expertise, or because of their complex and/or geographical considerations, require more flexibility to successfully investigate. This unit is organized into the following sections:
- Juvenile crimes
- Crime against people
- Property crimes
- Economic crimes
- Narcotics/vice crimes
- Warrants and fugitives
- Property control
- Forensics
- Cold cases
Investigators work with victims, witnesses and many other agencies to provide a positive impact on the community. They also partner with several local, state and federal task forces to conduct multi-jurisdictional investigations throughout the region.
Crime Line
The Department has been part of the Peninsula Crime Line since 1984. Since then, numerous James City County cases have been solved and arrests made due to caller's tips. The Peninsula Crime Line has paid out more than $22,000 in rewards for James City County cases since we have been a member. All money paid out for rewards comes from private citizen and business donations.
Callers to the Crime Line may remain anonymous, do not have to testify in court and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if the information leads to an arrest. James City Crime Line number is 1-888-LOCK-U-UP or go to the website for the Peninsula Crime Line.
