Housing Affordability

A household is cost burdened if they spend more than 30% of their income on housing. A household is severely cost burdened if they spend more than 50% of their income on housing. More than a quarter of James City County households are cost burdened, with 42% of those households being severely cost burdened. People who are cost burdened often have to make choices between paying for housing and paying for other necessities such as food and health care.
In James City County, housing cost burdens exist at every income level. Compare the income levels to the cost-burdened income levels to see who's most likely to be burdened by their housing costs. For example, when you compare the number of people earning $35,000 to $49,999 (right bubble chart) with the number of people who are cost burdened in that income (left bubble chart), you can see that those people are disproportionately cost-burdened.
