Housing Characteristics: Value & Age

The majority of homes in James City County were built between 1980 and 1999. A large portion of homes were also built after 2000. The value of James City County homes generally resembles a bell-curve, with the exception of the unusually high percentage of homes valued between $40,000 and $149,999.
Self-reported year built and home values are estimates given by the homeowner. Assessed year built and homes values are based on the real estate tax record. Additionally, assessed home values typically have a left-scew, as owners often challenge values they feel are too high (to reduce property taxes), while self-reported values typically have a right-scew because owners tend to think their homes are more valuable than other homes in the same neighborhood.
