Population by Age

America’s population is aging due to improvements in medical science and technology. The number of individuals aged 75 and over in James City County is expected to exceed 10,000 by 2020, a 50% increase over 2014. In James City County, 1,907 seniors are cost burdened (spend 30% or more of their income on housing)1.

“...37% of households aged 80 and over have at least moderate [housing-cost] burdens, including 20% with severe burdens”2.

Seniors living in substandard housing are at a higher risk of trips and falls and other housing-related health problems. In 2010, 2.3 million older Americans were treated in health care facilities for nonfatal falls2. Read more about housing-related health concerns for seniors (PDF).
