Therapeutic Recreation

James City County Parks & Recreation offers a variety of programs and activities for youth, teens and adults with disabilities. Each program is designed to meet the emotional, physical, social and cognitive needs of the participants. Below is a general list of programs. For more specific information about dates of current offerings, please refer to the Inclusion/Therapeutic Recreation section of the Destination Recreation Activity Brochure. Got Goo? Fun & Sticky Sensory Play!

All ages and abilities 

Do you like to play with slime? Have you ever painted with spaghetti? Join us for fun evenings full of yucky, messy activities. Snacks and materials provided. Bring a messy shirt. Parent/guardian must attend class with child. For more information, please call 757-259-5354. Located at the James City County Recreation Center. Registration is required.

Sensory Friendly Movie Night 

All ages and abilities

Enjoy a feature film with family and friends in a safe and accommodating environment. The lights will be turned down low and special sensory seating areas will be provided. Popcorn and snacks included. For more information, please call 757-259-5354. Registration is required. Located at the James City County Recreation Center.

TOPSoccer

Ages 4+ with disabilities

The Outreach Program for Soccer is a community-based training and team placement program for youth athletes with disabilities. Players are grouped based on size, ability level and age. Buddy Ball

Ages 5+ with disabilities

Buddy Baseball is provided in partnership with the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League. Players are assisted, one-on-one where appropriate, by volunteer buddies, who make it possible to adapt play to individual player needs. For details, call Joel Schwartz at 757-879-6222.

Buddy Art

Ages 7+ with disabilities

A variety of art activities are offered based on participant age, ability level and interests. Participants are assigned a volunteer ‘buddy’ to work with them one-on-one. Sponsored by Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center in partnership with volunteers from the College of William and Mary. Program is held at the James City County Recreation Center.

Teensational Socials

Ages 13-21 with disabilities

Explore, Engage, Excel…Socialize with peers and practice social skills through fun recreational activities and field trips in the community. Offered in partnership with Capernaum. For more information and a complete schedule of events, call 757-784-6226.

Yoga

Ages 18+ with disabilities

Move through a series of postures to allow the body to become flexible and healthy in a state of deep relaxation. Offered in partnership with The Arc of Greater Williamsburg. For more information on The Arc events or to become a member call 757-229-3535 or visit thearcgw.org.

Day  Program

Ages 18+ with disabilities

This program provides adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to receive educational, life skills and vocational training, as well as engage in social and recreational activities with their peers, instructors and the community. Family Health Fair

All ages and abilities

Join The Arc of Greater Williamsburg and learn about the health benefits our community has to offer to you and your family! Enjoy activities for all ages, healthy recipes and cooking demonstrations, giveaways, nutrition workshops and Zumba and Yoga demonstrations.
