The Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code requires a building permit (or a mechanical, electrical or plumbing permit) anytime a building or structure will be altered, constructed, converted, demolished, enlarged, moved, improved or repaired; or in a flood zone. Some examples include: decks, pools, hot tubs, crawlspace and replacement of gas fire appliances.
Virginia Building Codes are available to view on a paid subscription basis by visiting the International Code Council website.
The Building Safety & Permits Division is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Applications for such permits can be made to the Building Safety and Permits Division or at Satellite Services.
The Board of Adjustments & Appeals members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors and hears appeals regarding decisions made by the County Building Official.
