In an emergency, ambulance providers need to know your medical history to decide how best to take care of you. Searching for medication bottles or trying to remember dosages is the last thing you want to be doing if you or a loved one needs help. That’s why James City County Fire Department hands out Files of Life free of charge to County residents. A File of Life is a small plastic envelope with a magnet on the back to be placed on your refrigerator. Inside the envelope is a card on which to write your pertinent medical information and emergency contacts. If you are unable to communicate in an emergency, Firefighters know to look on the fridge for the information they need. Remember to keep the information up to date! It’s a good idea to review your File of Life after every doctor appointment and change medication information as needed. Stop by any of our fire stations or the fire administration building today to get one for every member of your household with chronic medical conditions.
