Come and enjoy family time in the pool! Free swim area and an area for our Wibit inflatable obstacle course are available! Games and prizes included. Pick up your event flyer at the James City County Recreation Center Front Desk. Non-swimmers are required to wear a lifejacket, which are provided. Registration required.

Hanukkah Craft Party • Ages 4-9
Sunday, Dec. 17, 2-3 p.m. • $15

If you’re looking for the perfect way to brighten up winter, come light a menorah with us this Hanukkah season. We’ve got all the glitter and glow you need just in time for the Festival of Lights! We’ll create a golden menorah with glittery candles that glow-in-the-dark. You’re going to want to leave this masterpiece hanging on the wall long after the holiday ends! Instructor: Instructor: Kidcreate Studio.  

Kwanzaa Unity Cup in Clay • Ages 5-12
Friday, Dec. 22, 5:30-6:30 p.m. • $15
James City County Recreation Center
Kwanzaa (Dec. 26-Jan.1) celebrates African American culture and is inspired by harvest festivals in Africa. The holiday includes feasting, exchanging of handmade gifts, dancing and music. We’ll create a Kwanzaa Unity Cup from clay adding mosaic designs in patterns. Let’s celebrate Kwanzaa by creating our own handcrafted piece. Instructor: Kidcreate Studio.  

Kid’s Gingerbread House Workshop • Ages 6-13 
Friday, Dec. 8, 5-7 p.m. • $25

Get in the holiday spirit and create your own gingerbread house! We’ll decorate the house using icings and other edible materials. Please note any food allergies at time of registration. Instructor: The Williamsburg Chocolatier, Inc. 

Holiday Cookie Decorating • Ages 7-13
Two sessions offered:
Friday, Dec. 15, 5-7 p.m. • $25
Saturday, Dec. 16, 10 a.m.-noon • $25

Decorate homemade cookies using buttercream icing in holiday colors! Fun holiday-themed shapes such as bells, presents, mittens and more! Please note any food allergies at time of registration, and bring two airtight containers. Instructor: The Williamsburg Chocolatier, Inc.  

Pottery Date Night! • Ages 18+
Friday, Dec. 8, 6-8 p.m. • $50/couple 
James City County Recreation Center
Calling all couples! Enjoy a messy, creative date night in our clay studio! Learn the basics of wheel throwing, and work collaboratively with your partner on the potter’s wheel. Successful pieces available for later pick up. $15 materials fee (cash or check) due to instructor at beginning of workshop. Instructor: Dorothy Round.  


Registration is open for Winter Break Programs for elementary school children in grades K-5, ages 5-10 years (must be enrolled in kindergarten). Space is limited; the deadline to register is Dec. 15, noon. Included are field trips and a pre-New Year’s celebration. Program dates are Dec. 20-22 & 27-29, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Drop-off and pick-up at Clara Bryd Baker Elementary School. Kids should bring a lunch every day, except Dec. 29. The fee is $25/day. Activity calendars will be sent to parents before the program start date. Indoor Cycle 101 • Ages 14+ FREE!

Indoor cycling classes can be overwhelming to jump into – music, seat settings, resistance level and to clip or not to clip. We’re here to help! Proper bike set-up can make or break your class experience and keep you injury-free. During this intro class, we’ll teach you all you need to enter the “spin” world. Put things in full gear with our awesome tunes, control over resistance and speed, and overall intensity. No bike experience needed.

The power of sound has been recognized for centuries as a tool for healing, meditation and spiritual growth. Scientific studies have shown that sound vibrations can positively impact our nervous system, reduce stress, improve sleep quality, enhance focus and support overall well-being. We’ll guide you to create a space where you can release tension, let go of mental chatter and connect with your inner self. No experience needed. Come try something new or experience something you already love!  

Frame Drumming Workshop • Ages 15+
Saturday, Dec. 9, 3-5 p.m. • $20
James City County Recreation Center 
This two-hour lesson is jam-packed with information, instruction, technique refinement, and lots of skill-building! It’s perfect for beginners as well as recreational drummers with an interest in deepening their drumming practice. We use frame drums, but many of the lessons can be applied and transferred to other types of drums and percussion instruments. Drums provided, but if you have a frame drum, please bring it!  

Techniques of Meditation • Ages 16+ FREE!

Intro to Pickleball • Ages 18+

Get introduced to one of the nation’s fasting growing sports— pickleball! Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines badminton, tennis and table tennis, and is played on smaller tennis courts. Learn the basic rules and playing fundamentals. All equipment provided.

What better way to warm up to winter than spending time by the fire enjoying a cup of hot chocolate! Our staff will host you, your friends and family for a hot chocolate bar with plenty of fun toppings and add-ins, an outdoor fire and a park-wide, scavenger hunt. Registration not required; hot chocolate available while supplies last.

All Outdoor Events are weather permitting. Before heading out, please call the Activities Hotline at 757-259-3232 any changes in schedules. 
Holiday Closures
º The James City County Recreation Center and the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center will be closed Christmas Eve, Dec. 24 and Christmas Day, Dec. 25. The facilities reopen Tuesday, Dec. 26. The James City County Recreation Center will close at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31. Both facilities are closed New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2024. The facilities reopen Tuesday, Jan. 2. 

º All County parks remain open throughout the holidays. However, some parks have stores/offices which will be closed. The stores/offices at Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Little Creek Reservoir Park, Freedom Park and the James City County Marina will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25 in observance of Christmas and Jan. 1, New Year's Day.
